You’re screwed, Major Tom.

I’m a fan of David Bowie’s older work, and last week I came across a list of the top 25 saddest songs somewhere. Most of them were poor choices, but Space Oddity was on there, and though I don’t think it’s really engrossing, it’s a great number. I always enjoyed the tale of Major Tom’s doomed spaceflight as told through melodic rock music. I like the imagery of isolation involved with being stranded in space with no hope of return. I’m also reminded of Ray Bradbury’s “Kaleidoscope” which relates a space crew’s conversation as they drift away from each other in space after a rocket explosion. Now THAT is a sad story.
